FM 2008: Staff Guide

we have a thread for players, but i realised we don't have one for staff so i thought this would be a good idea. so if you find a good member of staff can you list him in here, cos personally i find it hard to get the staff these days. can we please keep to the format, and can we give any 7 star ratings, i'll start off.

Name: Pako Ayestaran
Role(s): Asst Man
7 star training: defence, tactical
Current club: none
Other notes: is very good as a manager if you decide to go on holiday, due to high tac knowledge....

G.Nanni-physio-Bologna
F.Baresi-youth coach-Milan
V.Pincolini-ass man-Parma
V.Scala-coach-Roma
P.Paixo (sp) hes brazilian and prob best coach/ass man in game
Claudio Gaudino (fitness at Inter)

Some Scouts

The countries on the right are the places that he scouts best(on my game)(in order of how well)

Antonio Schio - Italy, Ukraine, Croatia 6/10
(Judging CA 17, Judging PA 12, Tactical knowledge 18)

Sandro Orlandelli - Argentina, Brazil, Uraguay 9/10
(Judging CA 18, Judging PA 17, Tactical knowledge 17)

Rene Moons - Holland, Denmark, Belgium 6.5/10
(Judging CA 18, Judging PA 14, Tactical knowledge 15)

(Judging CA 17, Judging PA 17, Tactical knowledge 15)

Tony Banfield - England, Nigeria 8/10

Ball Control - Jimmy Hendrie
Shooting - Tom Boyd
Tactics - Vito Scala
GK - Ray Clemence

Name: Ryszard Szul

These are all free agents:

Bjorn Nilsson is a very good ass-man imo.

Luit Zwaneld(spelling) 7 star coach in many things.

Ally Lynch very good fitness coach.

Kenneth Powel goalkeeping coach.

Name: Bill Beswick
Role(s): Asst Man/Coach
7 star training: None
Current club: None
Other notes: 20 man management, 20 determination, 18 JPA, 17 JPP, 18 Dicipline & 20 Motivation

Name: Wil Rodrigues
Role(s): Scout
Current club: None
Nationality: Brazilian (good for scouting south america)

=================

Here you go for guide

=================

Strength = Fitness 18
Aerobic = Fitness 18
Goalkeepers = GK 18
Tactics = Tactics 18
Defence = Defence 18 + Tactics 18
or Defence 19 = Tactics 14
or Defence 20 + Tactics 10

Attack is the same as Defence except substitute Defence stats for attacking stats

Ball Control = Technique 18 + Mental 18
19 + 14
20 + 10

Shooting = Technique 18 + Attack 18
19 + 14
20 + 10

Set Peices = Tech 17 + Mental/Att combine 39
Tech 18 + Ment/Att combined 36
Tech 19 + Ment/Att combined 33
Tech 20 + Ment/Att combined 30

These will give you 7 star training on each area,
You only need the one coach on each area but obviously the more you have the less the workload.

Hope this helps

FM 08 : Olympique Lyon

Olympique Lyonnais (popularly known as OL, or simply Lyon, or Les Gones) is a French football club based in Lyon. They play in Ligue 1 and are the reigning champions of France, for the sixth time running. Olympique Lyonnais play their home matches at the 43,051 seater Stade de Gerland, Lyon. OL are also a member of the...

G14 group of leading European football clubs. Lyon was formed as Lyon Olympique Universitaire in 1899, according to many supporters and sport historians but was nationally established as a club on August 3, 1950.

Full name : Olympique Lyonnais
Nickname : Les Gones or OL
Founded : 1899 (i'll take this date because its way Cool than 1950)
Ground : Stade Gerland (43.051 seats)
Chairman : Jean-Michel Aulas
Manager : that would be you Wink

Jean-Michel Aulas took control of the club in 1987 and invested in the club with the objective of European qualification and become an established Ligue 1 side, within fifteen years. European qualification was achieved after a mere two years at the top level (only four years of Aulas' control). After that they achieved - almost every year - european qualification. And with the beginning of the millenium they began their total domination of the french league. Lyon's European ambitions have meanwhile never been realised beyond the quarter-finals, however.

Olympique Lyonnais has a highly-active and loyal fan-base, in Lyon . The supporters have gained a strong reputation in Europe, due to their control of Ligue 1 as well as their appearances in the Champions League. The Stade de Gerland is frequently a sell-out in the majority of their home European and League matches.

Lyon has a healthy rivalry with fellow side Saint-Étienne, which is one of the highlights in Ligue 1. AS Monaco, Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain have been OL's secondary rivals, and in recent years Lille and RC Lens have posed threats.

Little something on the coachingstaff, scouts, physio. They are all great imho. I'd suggest you give the majority of them new (bigger) contracts, esp. youthcoaches are great give them a contract as "coach", they demand a lot more money but trust me they are worth it. (otherwise other teams will go for them)

Transferbudget : if i remember correctly it was about 20 mil euro but after asking for more the board gave me 45 mil euro which isn't to bad Big Grin.

Squad improvement (well imo) :

Coupet injured for 4 months, Cris injured for 7 months, Fred injured for 2 months, the 3 most important players for the team are out so they need replacement. You need a better GK (Kameni relaese clause), a defender (Ignashevich will cost nothing) and a striker (Adriano in first week, Martins, Owen, Pazzini, ...).
You also need to strengthen your midfield. VDV and Modric come to mind. But be aware of Ben Arfa he starts complaining if you buy even one midfielder. So see that you give him a new lengthy and with a big buy-out clause contract before you buy any midfielders.

Hope i didn't make any mistakes and enjoy this marvellous game.

Manchester United Football Club is an English football club, based at the Old Trafford stadium in Trafford, Greater Manchester, and is arguably the most popular football club in the world, with over 50 million supporters worldwide; average attendances at the club have been higher than any other team in English football for all but six seasons since 1964-65.

The club is also one of the most successful in English football; for over twenty years, since the 1986-87 season, they have won 18 major honours, which is more than any other Premier League club. They are the Premier League's reigning champions, and have won the Premier League/Football League 16 times. In 1968, they became the first English club to win the European Cup, beating S.L. Benfica 4–1, and they won a second European Cup in 1999 then for 2007-08. They also hold the record for the most FA Cup titles with 11.

Since the late 1990s, the club has been one of the richest in the world, and until recently had the highest revenue of any football club for several years running. As of 2007, the club has the fourth largest turnover in club football, but remains the most profitable club based on operating income. Great game posts

If you have just had a sensational win or a great match write little match report on it as it shows more than a screenshot does.

Who should I sign posts

If you want help and advice on a new signing post as much information as possible – this should include at least your transfer budget remaining, wage budget remaining, bank balance, players already in said position, transfer targets and what type of player you want (e.g. a quick, strong striker that is under 24).

Help strengthening team posts

If you want help and advice regarding strengthening your team post your starting line up and formations, substitutes, your feelings on the team, positions you want strengthening, transfer budget, transfer targets and the type of players you want. If you include as much information as possible it is easier for us to help you.

Updates

If you are going to post updates, please keep it to three a season – end of pre-season, end of January transfer window and end of season. This will make the thread easier to use and less clogged up. Also if you try and only use screenshots in these updates otherwise the thread will be littered with screenshots. If you do want to talk about a signing either put it in one of the three updates.

These updates should be along the lines of:

Pre-season update (year)
Transfers In
Transfers Out
Formation
Squad
Expectations for the season
Pre-season odds
Remaining transfer budget
Remaining wage budget

January transfer window update (year)
Transfers In
Transfers Out

Cup competitions
Revised expectations
Player and Manager Awards

End of season update
End of season league table

================================
my tactic
================================

Well having at a whack at the demo I notice the link up play is much better there fore I am quite excited about how i am going to get Ronaldo to perform.

My initial set up will be a 4-3-3 with the following earmarked to start early in the season:

GK: Van der sar
DL: Patrice Evra
DR: Gary Neville/Wes Brown
DC: Rio Ferdinand
DC: Nemanja Vidic
AML: Ryan Giggs/Nani
AMR: Cristiano Ronaldo
MCd: Owen Hargrieves
MCa: Paul Scholes

FC: Wayne Rooney
FC: Carlos Tevez

I think the side is pretty strong though in the first season I might look to find an extra AMC player as a long term replacement for Scholes. I wasn't that impressed with Anderson in the demo though there wil be plenty of time to test him out thoroughly.

My early choice as a possible incoming player is Matias Fernandez who I tried out with Barcelona in the demo. He was sublime to say the least and can be purchased for under 15mil which is a bargin considering he is a wonderkid.

Strikers

Up front might need some depth too with just Tevez and Rooney in my opinion good enough to start. Saha is someone to bring of the bench and in a long season I think Utd need someone else to take the pressure of the Rooney/Tevez pairing.

Early prospects there are possibly Fred at Lyon (though I will check him out more to see whether he is suitable) and Ashley Young (if I decide to combine a midfield and striker sighing into one).

Midfield

The United midfield is strong when you consider the world class flair of Ronaldo and the promise of Nani plus the experienced old heads of Scholes and Giggs.

However Giggs and Scholes are only medium term considerations so thought needs to be given as to their sucessors. nani certainly is one and Anderson remains to be seen. Hargrieves and Carrick should be good for a few years in the holding/playmaker role.

Defence

It may be that Gary Neville needs a long term replacement brought in since Wes isn't probably in most of our minds as a starting right back. Ideally I'd love to buy Micah Richards though the Man City rivallry might well be a stumbling block there.

Central defence is strong and in Pique there is a bright prospect to replace Vidic or Ferdinand in case of injury.

Left back is strong with Evra and while I was considering a Gareth Bale type player to come in as cover it may be that Silvestre is suitable for a season at least.

Goalkeeper

Van der Sar is undisputed number one in this area though I suspect once he ages past 2/3 more seasons there will be a temtation to buy someone big. My initial interests are in Frey who I think would be cheapish considering his talent. The likes of Ustari, Akinfeev and even Craig Gordon are in the frame though.

FM2008 - Arsenal FC

Arsenal Football Club (also known as Arsenal, The Arsenal or The Gunners) are an English professional football club based in Holloway, North London. They play in the Premier League and are one of the most successful clubs in English football, having won thirteen First Division and Premier League titles and ten FA Cups.

Arsenal were founded in 1886, though the club's first period of major success came in the 1930s, where they dominated English football for a decade. After a lean period in the post-war years they became only the second club of the 20th century to win the Double in 1970–71, and during the past twenty years they have been one of the most successful clubs in English football — in this time Arsenal won two further Doubles, the Premier League in 2003–04 unbeaten, and in 2005–06 became the first London club to reach the UEFA Champions League final.

The club's colours have traditionally been red and white, although these have evolved through history. Similarly, the club have changed location over time; the team were initially founded in Woolwich, south-east London, but in 1913 they moved north across the city to Arsenal Stadium, Highbury. In 2006 they made a less drastic move to their current home, the Emirates Stadium in nearby Holloway.

Arsenal have a large and diverse fanbase, who hold a string of long-standing rivalries with several other clubs; the most notable of these is with neighbours Tottenham Hotspur, with whom they regularly contest the North London derby. Arsenal are one of the richest clubs in English football (worth over £600m as of 2007), and thanks to their stature, have regularly featured in portrayals of football in British culture.

Analysis
The while the cream of the team, players such as Fabregas, Gallas, Toure and Van Persie have all maintained a similarly high standard to their last incantations in 07 the real difference to Arsenals squad this time round has been the improvement of squad players like Diaby, Denilson, Song, Adebayor and Almunia to the point that they are very useful rotation/squad players rather than the trade bait they were in FM2007. Ill analyze the squad assuming you're using a vanilla 4-4-2

Goalkeeper - Lehmann seems to have been slightly strengthened in 08, i played a full half season with him and he was very very solid and didnt make the gaff's that he is prone to in real life and in 07. This spot will become a problem after a season or two in the game as Almunia and Fabianski, while solid arnt going to keep many clean sheets if you're consistently playing top level football.
I'd start looking for a suitable replacement after a season. Old favorites Akinfeev, Ustari and Ochao are all rated very highly again and will likely be available for around 15 million euros.

Defense - Toure, Gallas, Senderos and Nordveit are the first team center backs, Eboue and Sagna play the right while Clichy and Traore are on the left. Arsenal again have a very very exciting back starting back four Sanga - Gallas - Toure - Clichy is one of the best in Europe and barring serious injury problems you shouldn't have any problems with that line.
You might look to sign someone short term to cover for Clichy until Traore is able to take over. Djourou returns from his loan at Birmingham at in January to strengthen the center back position.

Midfield - Again a very strong line of four Rosicky(AML) - Gilberto(DM) - Fabregas(MC) - Hleb(AMR) with strong cover from Diaby(MC), Diarra(DM), Flamini(DM), Song(MC) or Denilson(MC) with the potential to rotate any of Walcott(AMR), Eduardo(AML) and Van Persie(AMR/L) through if you're in a crisis. The center of the park is incredibly deep, potentially look at quicker wingers on both sides to cover for Hleb and Rosicky.
Marcelo is available early on and has a release clause of 8 million so he's a definite possibility, other potential targets are the super cheap Luka Modric, Van Der Vaart is able to be picked up for about 15 as well.

Strikers - You start with a great set of five strikers - Eduardo, Van Persie, Adebayor, Walcott, Bendtner and in a season Carlos Vela returns from loan. You can very well go for 10 years without needing to purchase anyone else for this position as every single one of these players is either currently top shelf or will develop to a high level. Of the five i've been most impressed by Walcott, the game engine has a much higher appreciation for speedy players than 07 had and young Theo is one of the quickest in the game, his finishing is a bit low but he makes up for it by running past defenders like they arnt there and getting lots of shots on goal.
Potential targets early on if you're looking to strengthen this area could be Adriano who is listed as "back up" at Inter and able to be purchased for a bargain price of about 10 million and Julio Baptista (i know, sucks in real life, great in the game) who can be picked up for about 15.

Anyway, that's a pretty basic analysis of the squad, I hope it helps some people get a good start at an Arsenal game. You've got a great squad to play with and a massive kitty to strengthen if you need to. Dont hesitate to disagree with any of my analysis or post your own formations, transfers advice, tips and results.

Good luck and Go Gunners!

OFFICIAL GPTG FAQ

This is an FAQ which has the aim of helping out the new users in the forums and perhaps re jogging the memories of some of the more experienced members.

Well where to start...

This is the Good Player & Team Guide. (GPTG) And it is obviously for helping people with the finding of good players and the strengthening of their team.

Uncovered a rough diamond, think you've found an excellent player, have you built your dream XI, are you looking for some advice on building a successful team or do you need tips on the best players or staff for your team? No matter which it is, this is the place for you.

Explain work permits and how to get them

Work Permits are one annoying thing to get around. They are needed in the UK
and Ireland. So how do you get your player a work permit? What does he need to
get one?

Well, if the player you are looking at has one of these nations as either his
main nationality or second nationality (basically the EU + some other nations),
you're fine:

Austria Germany Norway
Belgium Greece Portugal
Cyprus Holland Slovakia
Czech Republic Hungary Slovenia
Denmark Iceland Spain
Estonia Ireland Sweden
Finland Italy Switzerland
France, incld French Guyana Latvia United Kingdom
Guadeloupe Lithuania
Martinique Luxembourg
Reunion Malta

If it isn't, you'll need a permit.

First of all, the player's calibre is taken into account. If he's a very good
player, has many international appearance's etc then he'll most likely get the
permit first time round. If not you can always appeal the decision, and usually
get the decision in your favour.

If your player was rejected a permit, why did this happen? Well, people are
given Work Permits if they are skilled workers. If your target is not much
better than British players, there is no reason, in the governments eyes, to go
for the foreigner and ignore the English players. Its purpose is to protect the
Economy from being saturated with foreigners, and help give the British people
jobs, no matter what the industry. I used the UK as the example, but the same
would apply to other countries needing a work permit.

There are ways to get around this though. First of all, you can get a European
feeder club. This means that even without a permit, you can still buy the
player. By sending him to the European feeder club for a couple of years, he'll
eventually gain EU Citizenship = instant permit. It's a lengthy process, and
I'd only recommend it for players who are 21 or under. Each country takes a
different amount of time for foreigners to gain EU Citizenship there, so here's
the list:

3 years 4 years 7 years 10 years
------- --------- -------- -------

Belgium Spain Denmark Greece
Poland Holland Slovenia

5 years
-----------------------------------------------------------

Austria French Guyana Italy Renuion
Cyprus Germany Latvia Slovakia
Czech Republic Guadeloupe Lithuania Sweden
Estonia Holland Luxembourg Switzerland
Finland Hungary Malta
France Iceland Martinique
Ireland Portugal

As well as loaning out, every so often you can try offering your player a new
contract. He will be reapplied for a permit, and if you're lucky, he may be
granted one.

When searching for a new player too in South American countries, keep an eye
out for his other nationalities. Many Brazilians have Portuguese/Spanish, and
some Argentineans have Italian as a second nationality. If you find players
like this then it means they will get an instant permit.

In certain south american countries if your first language is spanish, you wait only 2 years to gain citzenship

We'll start with an explanation of the terms "Current Ability" and "Potential Abiliyy".

Every player in the game will have a current ability, a number between 1 and 200 that indicates the overall level of skill the player possess. Current ability can change depending on a number of factors such as injuries, game time and training.

Potential ability is the maximum value that the CA can reach. It does not change.

Player A has CA 100 and PA 200
Player B has CA 100 and PA 110

Player A is the brightest prospect all in all, as player B has almost “maxed out” and is near his peak.

You can easily find out the CA/PA of any player in the database through the Editor that comes with the boxed game.

What does a negative PA mean?

A negative PA is assigned to some players in the game editor – when you start a new game FM will assign the player a PA from the following ranges:

-10 = PA 170-200
-9 = 150-180
-8 = 130-160
-7 = 110-140
-6 = 90-120
-5 = 70-100
-4 = 50-80
-3 = 30-60
-2 = 10-40
-1 = 0-20

How to Post a Screen shot

1. While in FM, press the 'Prt Sc' button (usually next to F12 on your keyboard).
2. Open an image editing program such as Paint and paste the image
3. Save the file as a JPEG
4. Upload the image to an image hosting website such as Photobucket or Imageshack
5. Post the direct Url to the image here.

What is an in-game Editor?

An in-game editor is a program such as FMM (Football Manager Modifier) which allows the user to change the data within the game after the game has started unlike the Editor that comes with the game which can only affect new games.

Genie Scout

The Genie Scout is a free tool that allow the user to look up information in a save game such as CA, PA, Sale Value, etc.

Next we come onto Regens and Freds.

The game's database starts off with a certain number of players and when someone decides to retire it means that there is 1 less player in the database. A regen is the retired player but the game makes him a brand new name, age, stats, description etc for him, and he is then placed in a random team.

A Fred is a player created by the game at the end of every season that has no relation to any player in the game, it is just to balance out the database.

Feeder Clubs & Parent Clubs

A feeder club is a club that is officially linked with a larger club which is known as the parent club. The feeder club's agreement with the parent club usually has a number of conditions.

These can be anything from, the parent club having to send some of it's younger players to the feeder club on loan or the feeder club holding an annual friendly between the teams to raise funds for the smaller team.

Also, the parent club usually pays the feeder club an annual lump sum of money for the privileges of having them as a feeder club.
